The Perfect New Series For Wayward Buffy Fans

Wayward

Writer Jim Zub (SKULLKICKERS, Samurai Jack) teams up with penciler Steve Cummings (Legends of the Dark Knight, Deadshot) and color artist John Rauch (INVINCIBLE) to create a Buffy the Vampire Slayer for a new generation in WAYWARD, coming from Image Comics in August.

Rori Lane is an outsider by nature, but moving to Tokyo to live with her single Mom has only exacerbated her weirdness. She’s feeling out of sorts, worried about fitting in and, as if that wasn’t enough, strange things are beginning to happen. Glowing symbols and patterns are starting to appear before her eyes… and she’s the only one who seems to notice.

“Wayward is a coming-of-age story filled with mystery and emotion. It’s also an ass-kicking joy ride with teenagers beating the hell out of Japanese mythological monsters,” said Zub. “Steve and I built this series from the ground up to play to both our strengths. I can’t wait for people to see what we have planned.”

In WAYWARD a group of teens living in Tokyo find a common bond in manifesting strange, supernatural abilities. As they begin to unravel the mystery behind their powers and their common source they’re drawn into a war with the vestiges of Japan’s monstrous mythic past.

WAYWARD #1 arrives in stores on 8/27, and will be available for $3.50 with special variant covers by Alina Urusov (Birds of Prey), Jeff “Chamba” Cruz (Street Fighter), and Adam Warren (Empowered).

COMIC BOOK REVIEW: The All-New Marvel NOW! – Cyclops #1

Cyclops_1_Land_Variant
Before getting started, I just want to acknowledge this year is the year of reboots and first issues. Boy do we really need them. For that matter, we are given another X-men spin-off title. Don’t get me wrong. Magneto’s series is kick ass! Check out JM’s review on it and your see why! I am really into, Brian Michael Bendis’ “All New X-men” but my interest for a pubescent teenage Scott Summers with daddy issues is non-existent.

The comics isn’t terrible buy any stretch of the imagination; but it’s just average. The art has done very well to keep to artist David Marquez’s drawing style of the young Scott Summers from All New X-Men. There are some redeeming quality’s. For instance, Scott using his optical beam through space. Also, there is a scene in the Space Jammers cockpit what very Star Wars Esq and it was cool to see how a young Scott Summers instinctively lead the head of the attack on the other ship…but that’s really about it. There is just no substance. No edge to get you hooked. No yearning for more. The way it ends it could easily be a one shot issue with nothing really leading you for more or no real cliff hanger.

I know I’m not really writing much about the first issue but I don’t believe in shitting on someone else work too much. To me this comic isn’t worth paying for by adding it to your Wednesday hauls. So swerve it for now, maybe wait until it’s a Trade Paper Back. Nevertheless, if you do get it go for Skottie Young’s baby variant. Its a pretty cool dawn baby Cyclops shooting his optic beam. Anyways, I’m only going to give this a 2 Metal Horns out of 5.

BURN THE ORPHANAGE Charity Auction For Pancreatic Cancer Research

Burn The Orphanage

Image Comics creator Sina Grace has teamed up with The Lustgarten Foundation to donate all 20 pages of art from BURN THE ORPHANAGE: REIGN OF TERROR #1 to support pancreatic cancer research. The series of auctions, titled Compassion vs. Cancer, will go entirely to The Lustgarten Foundation’s efforts in raising awareness for the under-funded and highly-deadly cancer.

With only a 6% survival rate, pancreatic cancer is a lethal type of cancer that affects an average of one in 68 people. No stranger to the loss of friends and family from both cancer in general and pancreatic cancer, Grace sought out the Lustgarten Foundation to brainstorm ways to make a dent in the fight against cancer.

Grace explained, “After losing a friend to cancer last month, I needed to do something bigger than wallowing and worrying. By donating all of the art from my book, I can raise more funds towards great cause and possibly inspire my peers to do the same.”

The auctions all start between $10 and $25, allowing fans of all income brackets a chance to participate. All proceeds from the auctions will go to the Lustgarten Foundation to fund and support research into the biological mechanisms and clinical strategies related to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer, as well as facilitating dialogue and public awareness for pancreatic cancer patients, their families, and friends.

BURN THE ORPHANAGE is a video game-loving action series from Sina Grace (SELF-OBSESSED, LI’L DEPRESSED BOY, NOT MY BAG) and Daniel Freedman (UNDYING LOVE, STIMULUS). Issue #1 of the REIGN OF TERROR story arc debuted today, showing the team of heroes in peril against a corporation that has taken the city under siege.

To place your bid, please visit: http://www.compassionvscancer.com to view all of the auctions, which will remain open until May 17th.
