The Star Wars Expanded Universe Explodes Like the Death Star

Star Wars Disney
Luke Skywalker married Mara Jade. Han and Leia had twins. Chewbacca dies when planets collide. Most Star Wars fans may have not read every single Star Wars comic or novel that was ever written, but they know a few basic facts such as those I mentioned above. Well, according to Lucasfilm and Disney; from now on, none of those things ever happened. At least when it pertains to the official canon of the Star Wars film and television universe. The six films that have been made, The Clone Wars animated series, including the mini series, the upcoming Star Wars Rebels animated series, and the new Star Wars films on the way are the only official cannon from now on. They have chosen to “erase”, in essence, the Star Wars Expanded Universe in-order to begin fresh with the new era of Star Wars projects. Most important of that is the J.J. Abrams directed Star Wars Episode VII, due in theaters in 2015. No more Mara Jade, Jacen Solo, Grand Admiral Thrawn, and Chewbacca is alive and well, and well Boba Fett, that remains to be seen.

So why did Lucasfilm choose to do this? Well it’s no secret George Lucas likes to mess with things. Perhaps that’s it. Or just maybe they wanted to keep things fresh and when the upcoming announcement about casting is made, it erases all speculation of where this new series of films is headed. The internet doesn’t have to guess on who from the now former Expanded universe may appear and who may not. Because now none of them will appear. Star Wars Episode VII will be a fresh new take on the mythology of the galaxy far, far away. All be it a few familiar faces look like they are going to be along with us for the ride, and that is okay with me. I was born right in the middle of the Star Wars generation. I am the Star Wars generation. The fantastic comic books from Dark Horse will still be there for me to read and enjoy, regardless if they aren’t “official”. I actually have always considered them an alternate take of what could have been outside the films regardless, so for me the deletion from cannon of the Expanded Universe doesn’t really bother me that much. I’m sure there are some Star Wars fans that are in outrage over this but they will get over it and in December 2015 they will be in the theater to see what Disney, Lucasfilm, and J.J. Abrams bring us next. May The Force Be With You, Always.
